"It just seemed arbitrary, and not very smart": EA was never a responsible owner for Bioware, but the developer never seemed to learn from their mistakes

19 years after buying Bioware, Electronic Arts have closed the veteran RPG developer. But as saddening as this is, bringing an end to series such as Dragon Age and Mass Effect, EA have never had an easy relationship with the studio. Looking through old interviews with developers who worked across Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, and Anthem, the corporation immediately changed the atmosphere of the studio and never seemed to understand what exactly they had bought, or even why. However, another thread of the conversations is tha

Xbox reportedly mandate four days a week in office for staff close to Microsoft's Washington HQ, up from three day requirement brought in last year

Xbox have reportedly informed staff that, from the start of February 2027, those within commuting distance of Microsoft's Washington base will have to come into the office four days a week. This follows the mandating of three days in office last year, and comes as the company are looking at cutting more staff as part of ongoing efforts to eventually get rid of 3200 people in multi-round mass layoffs. Captivating cosmic megastructure adventure game Hypnos leaves early access next week, offering up a world I'm desperate to dig into further

I just love me a megastructure, I do. I'm not entirely sure why, to be honest. My best guess is that growing up in a major city with concrete pillars looming over me higher into the sky than I care to take notice of, perhaps even threatening me, left me with a sense of awe towards that which exists at a scale I can't really comprehend. With that, I was quite quickly hooked on whatever Hypnos was putting down, even if when I first had a go at it I couldn't quite tell you what was going on. And now, after a stint in early access, the eldritch "megastructure fever dream," is launching into 1.0 in

Even at their most chaotic and conflicted, BioWare were the heart of the western computer RPG

Life... is strength. The gears of this world are tuned for a quick death. Doomity-doom-doom! We is all doooooo-oooomed! The Guardian says for me to be cheerful, and to not repeat what he says all the... oh. I'm Commander Shepard, and this is my favourite store on the Citadel. You simians may merely refer to me as 'Sir,' if you prefer a less... syllable-intensive workout. I have seen the throne of the Gods, and it was empty. Stand in the ashes of a trillion dead souls and ask the ghosts if honour matters. There are people like you everywhere. It's just that not everyone has the words for it yet

An internal Mass Effect 5 trailer has reportedly leaked, offering you a glimpse at the sequel you'll never get to play

Yesterday, only a couple of months after EA went private after having been acquired by Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund, equity firm Silver Lake, and Jared Kushner's Affinity, it was announced that BioWare are being shut down, with development on their next Mass Effect game cancelled. Now, only a day after this was announced, a trailer that was meant for internal use only has been shared, showing off a rough idea of what the game would be like. Read more

Robot smashing catharsis game Virtue and a Sledgehammer is out next week, but there's an experimental visual novella prologue you can play right now

Virtue and a Sledgehammer looks like a satisfying game. There is perhaps no more wonderfully chunky and impact frame friendly a weapon than the reliable sledgehammer, and when put into a game with a description like, "Most people resort to therapy. But you chose the brave option. A sledgehammer," then of course I have to give it a look. Unfortunately, I still have to wait a week to check out the full thing. Fortunately, a prologue to the game just dropped for free that offers a tantalising, and quite different, experience. Read more

A Line Held Tight is a charcoal visual novel about a miner's strike in the 32nd century and choosing your relationships wisely

We've had about roughly four decades of games as we generally know them now, and yet somehow, so often their stories feel so limited in scope. I'm not talking about a lack of big, bold ideas, in fact there might be too many of those. I more mean that there are aspects to life that often go uncovered in games. For example, when was the last time you saw a game about a workers strike? Citizen Sleeper 2 has one questline about such a thing, but it's just what the entire game is about. A Line Held Tight, a mecha visual novel about a sci-fi miner's strike, may bridge that gap. Read more

"What if Larian had shut down after Divine Divinity?": Star Trek Online exec scorns publishers who close teams like BioWare in favour of "AAA veteran" start-ups and AI "magic beans"

Breaking up established game development teams in favour of "AAA veteran" start-ups and "magic bean" technologies is like "setting fire to millions of dollars of property and equipment", in the words of Star Trek Online executive producer Thomas Marrone. He thinks it's "wildly irresponsible and self-sabotaging", and that videogame company shareholders should be absolutely furious about it. Marrone's comments come in response to EA closing BioWare yesterday, but he takes aim at closures and layoffs across the industry. He notes that many of the most successful teams owe their accomplishments to

Cyberpunk 2077's new dual wielding has already been modded to include shotguns and rifles, provided you're down to get "janky and wildly overpowered"

It was only ever going to be a matter of time, but I'm still surprised just how quickly Cyberpunk 2077 modders have taken pistol dual wielding mechanic the RPG's Edgerunners 2 update has just added in, and opened it up to include any gun Night City has to offer. Yep, twinning shotguns, assault rifles, sniper rifles, or any combo of those is now possible. Though, you'll have to make peace with the fact enemies will struggle to match your firepower. Read more

Half-Life 3 speculation reignited by Valve dev mentioning three sweet little rumored codenamey letters amid technical chat about video game noises

Wake up. There's Half-Life 3 chatter occurring again. This time because, about an hour into a panel about sounds in video games, a Valve composer has uttered three eyebrow-raising letters. HLX. In an industry rife with acronyms, what's so special about this one? Well, it's a rumoured codename for the next entry in the aforementioned series about a man with a crowbar, for one. Read more

Helldivers 3 "only makes sense" if it’s so unlike Helldivers 2 "that both games can exist side by side", says Arrowhead boss, discussing their new prototype game

Arrowhead Game Studios will only make a Helldivers 3 if it's lightyears apart in style from Helldivers 2, or if Helldivers 2's playercount falls through the floor. This is my takeaway, at least, from a recent chat with Johan Pilestedt, chief creative officer, in which Pilestedt touched briefly on the studio's next unannounced game, while assuring me that there are still no plans for a Helldiver threequel. Arkane survival negotiations reportedly seeing "several forms of takeover" considered ahead of November deadline, as Marvel's Blade production nears end

Negotiations over the future of Dishonored and Deathloop developers Arkane Lyon are reportedly seeing "several forms of takeover" considered as a November deadline looms for the divorce Xbox set in motion back in July. French law makes the process of shuttering or chucking away studios a lot harder for companies like Microsoft than it is elsewhere in the world, hence Arkane's fate still being up in the air while production work on Marvel's Blade nears completion according to the report. Woim is the earth-guzzling, self-bisecting sokoban pick-me-up I needed after a week of games industry disasters

While ladling city-builders into the Maw's feeding trough this week, I remarked that being a worm must really suck. Then came the closure of BioWare, layoffs across other EA studios, further depressing genAI revelations, allegations of antisemitism at indie gaming events, a big Capcom data breach, and yet more worrying tidyings about Arkane. I rescind my earlier observation: I would like to be a worm. A happy little worm, tunnelling after golden apples in the moist and forgiving earth, where there are no emails or press releases at all. The only thing I have to worry about down here is my butt

"This was not a Creative Assembly developed game": Total War boss points the finger at external partner for Shogun 2 Complete Edition disaster

Last week, Creative Assembly and Sega pulled Total War: Shogun 2's remastered Complete Edition from Steam, after an avalanche of complaints about technical problems and some AI-generated art. Now, Total War vice president Roger Collum has written a personal apology, while pinning some of the blame on an unnamed external partner. He's also clarified Creative Assembly's stance on generative AI, conceding that the studio do use it to help with "analysis, debugging, or speedy prototyping", but that they're against using it to generate game assets and art. BioWare staff "should be given the first opportunity and the federal support" to buy the studio and keep it running, says Canadian political party leader

Hope. It's in short supply at the moment. Regardless, I hope that something a Canadian politician's proposed in a post scoring easy likeability points at the expense of EA's recently installed owners comes to pass, no matter how unlikely it is to do so at this point. Rather than being unceremoniuously shuttered, leaving the world staring down the barrel of a future without new games from a storied studio, BioWare should be handed over to its staff with backing from the Canadian government. Factorio's final major update has rolled off the assembly line, adding "the things we wanted to do for 2.0 but didn't have time for"

In one of the happier endings to occur in games this week, impossibly enormous resource management sim Factorio has just released its last-ever major update – version 2.1 – on its stable branch. As previously heads-upped by developers Wube Software, 2.1 doesn’t make any big new additions to its planets or tech trees, but does sneak in more than 30 quality of life improvements and minor new features for both the base game and its Space Age expansion. Including, they say, "the things we wanted to do for 2.0 but didn't have time for." Nice to get a few final pieces out the door before it closes,
