Arkane survival negotiations reportedly seeing "several forms of takeover" considered ahead of November deadline, as Marvel's Blade production nears end

Negotiations over the future of Dishonored and Deathloop developers Arkane Lyon are reportedly seeing "several forms of takeover" considered as a November deadline looms for the divorce Xbox set in motion back in July. French law makes the process of shuttering or chucking away studios a lot harder for companies like Microsoft than it is elsewhere in the world, hence Arkane's fate still being up in the air while production work on Marvel's Blade nears completion according to the report. What are we all playing this weekend?

After months of umming ahhing over paint colours, covering our living room wall in little swatches of testers, we've finally got exasperated with the entire process selected Cherry Caramel. I would be clearing out the living room to start painting today, but, honestly, after the surprise DIY of an exploded sink yesterday, maybe what's called for is some gaming. Nothing to do with either piping, water levels, or interior design. Sorry, Pipemania, Bioshock, and House Flipper. Enough about my exploded sink, though, he's what everyone else is up to this weekend. Read more

Mass Effect 3 ending discourse ignored the RPG's scale, ambition, and exuberance, including that of its oddly great co-op

Ah, come on, it was fine. Better than fine. We can argue for another fourteen years about whether BioWare should have redone the ending or not, but Mass Effect 3 was really a compendium of endings, a ludicrously ambitious wrapping-up of dozens of plot threads, character arcs, and running gags. Even if you can point to other RPGs that, on an individual basis, are more branching and reactive, Mass Effect 3's largely successful closing of a galaxy's worth of choose-your-own adventure books - filled in and followed across three evolving instalments - showed an audacity and grandiosity that no othe

After a few hours with Yakuza studio's soulful Stranger Than Heaven, I'm smitten, but I suspect it'll be a divisive game

Who doesn't love a big swing, a bold new direction, especially when so many video game publishers seem increasingly determined to walk the safest route? While Stranger Than Heaven might look familiar at first glance - particularly if you're a fan of Like a Dragon developer RGG's other third-person action games - it differs where it counts. And to my mind, it's one of the most exciting games the studio has worked on in a while. Read more

Following shock BioWare closure, scope of EA job cuts becomes clear as layoffs hit Respawn, Maxis, Full Circle, EA Motive, and more

EA announced overnight it's closing Mass Effect and Dragon Age studio BioWare in a new round of cuts that include the elimination of 400 roles across the publisher. But while it confirmed BioWare's 50 workers are affected, and that Skate studio Ripple Effect was being downsized, it did not say where the other 350 job cuts would come from. Read more

Farewell BioWare, you inspired so many of us, and you deserved so much better than this

Oof. I expected this day to come but the news has left me winded nonetheless; BioWare, the creator of so many beloved role-playing series and games - Mass Effect, Dragon Age, Baldur's Gate, Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic - has been closed. EA decided it had no place for it under its new Saudi and private investment ownership. So Mass Effect 5 has been canned, and a studio that helped shape an industry and popularise role-playing games over the course of 31 years is no more. Read more

What we've been playing - "Shoving Moon Flesh into an alien grandma's mouth"

Hello, it is me, your regular weekend host Mertie and I am here once again to guide you gently into Saturday with our usual feature What We've Been Playing, where we write a little about the games we've been, yes, playing. This week, Bertie - before fleeing for a well-deserved break and leaving me with the keys to the place - runs a one-on-one D&D game; Connor plays with his Moon Flesh in Warframe, and I've been serenely gallivanting over yonder hills.
